Lunge Matrix 2017
In an earlier post I asked, "What's Your Movement Practice?" and stated that sports activity can be analysed into three planes of movement: frontal, sagittal, and transverse. In this post, I show this Lunge Matrix, a series of five lunges which incorporates these three planes of movement into one routine. I use this routine as part of my warm up before a run (or other endurance activity). It can also be part of a strength training routine for athletes and soon-to-be-athletes.
Lunging is considered a fundamental and functional movement. For more on functional training, check out: Functional Training & Running

While this is one of my older posts, I still use the Lunge Matrix a lot. In 2022 I used it as part of my concurrent training program mentioned in: Running Resolutions for 2022 . In 2025 I used it as part of Exercises that Extend your Aerobic Stimulus
